The History And Conflicts Of The South CaucasusThe South Caucasus has witnessed conflicts and wars since the early 1700s The region has three main countries that are suffering from its past and present The Caucasus contains around ten main nationalities Among those ten there are three main ethnic groups which are Georgians Armenians and Azerbaijanis The three countries have different perceptive and political understandings on issues that happened in the region Although suffering from political or economical struggle has been seen in all three countries These three countries have their own unique relationship with RussiaSoviet Union Relationship between Georgians Armenians and Russians goes back in history as early as the 1722 When Lenin was in power during the Soviet era he had the idea of nationalization Which Lenin believe that even if small nations did seize the opportunity to declare themselves states they would soon realize the benefits of being part of a larger territorial unit and would opt for reincorporation Smith pg 5 After Lenins death Stalin led the Soviet Union and brought the idea of Russification The policy of Russification forced the non-Russian communities to give up their culture and language in favor of the Russian one The idea of Russification was not favored by Armenian Georgian and Azerbaijani people A historian Zurab Avalov from Georgia commented by skinning himself a Georgian doesnt become a Russian but simply as skinned Georgian De Waal pg 50 The idea of Russification created an awkward situation between the states The interest of the Russians has been somewhat of a tradition in the South Caucasus as Stalin told Pravda in 1920 The important meaning of the Caucasus for the revolution is determined not only by the fact that it is sources of raw materials fuel and food supplies but by its position between Europe and Asia and particular between Russia and Turkey and the presence of the most important economic and strategic roads De Waal pg
