Deuteronomy takes place directly before the Israelites cross the Jordan to enter the Promised Land It is a summarization of the Israelites journey from Egypt to the Promised Land which Moses tells to the people in preparation for crossing the Jordan Moses is telling the story so that they dont forget the Lords acts of greatness and kindness towards them and lose faith in Him or turn to other gods when they enter the Promised Land Moses also reviews all the laws that they must follow in order to stay blessed in Gods eyes including the Ten Commandments and how they must settle disputes among themselves Deuteronomy is also the story of Moses death and the passing of the torch so to speak to Joshua who succeeds Moses and leads the Israelites across the Jordan into the land the Lord has promised them The spiritual emphasis of the book was to have faith in the Lord and follow His laws because He will lead and protect you but if you loose faith in Him or worship other gods He will turn His head away from you and place a curse on you In the Lords eyes faith is the only way to salvation and prosperity in this life In reading this book I have noticed that the number forty is often used to describe the passage of time forty years in the desert when Moses sent the scouts ahead to the villages I believe it said they were gone for forty days and in the story of Noah it rained for forty days and nights Is there any reason for this
