The welfare system is a mess but not because it entices people with so much money up for grabs It is a mess because it does not help people get out of poverty and because it penalizes those who go to work Poor people need to take more personal responsibility for themselves and promise to set a two-year limit on welfare as stated by President Bill Clinton With an interview with Diane Sawyer she stated that With so much money up for grabs welfare fraud may be even better than robbing a bank Welfare In the state of Ohio in 2004 83000 people were receiving government assistance Cole Welfare has been beneficial and has helped families through hard times but it has also been detrimental to the nation by its misuse by many According to the article Welfare Reform in Ohio currently in state of Ohio drug testing is not mandatory before receiving government assistance Eight states have passed legislation regarding drug testing for welfare assistance recipients these states are Arizona Florida Georgia Kansas Missouri Oklahoma Tennessee and Utah Tompkins Should Ohio citizens who receive government assistance be drug tested To combat fraudulent use of taxpayer money Ohio citizens who receive government assistance and the state can help make the connection between drug use and welfare assistance and with that they can address the gap in the states government assistance Ohio government assistance or welfare should only be assisting recipients who are currently working and need extra help Welfare was created for a short term use only not a lifelong program Sadly many people who are receiving the benefits of government assistance are abusing this power If Ohio assists only recipients who need the extra help the amount of recipients would decrease The number of recipients would decrease because many of the welfare recipients are drug users and if drug testing was mandatory before receiving aid they would fail the test and then not
