In Kate Chopins The Story of an Hour Mrs Mallard is imprisoned by her marriage society and her conscience Kate Chopins The Story of an Hour depicts a social situation of the times a woman a prisoner to her husband Chopin is known for her works that challenge social conventions concerning womens issues and behaviors Her novels and stories provoke heated discussions about these issues which are main points in The Story of an Hour Common knowledge of womens rights in the 1800s were that marriages were male dominated Women had no rights only that which were to obey to their oppressive husbands and take care of children Marriages are not always about mutual love between a man and a woman but especially during this time era it was more about monetary comfort and social acceptance Mrs Mallard was a young and had fair calm face that indicated repression first learns of her husbands death and is overcome with emotions she weeps in the arms of her sister before returning to her room alone Which symbolizes and foreshadows her freedom which Mrs Mallard will soon realize She sits in the chair facing an open window she sinks down from physical exhaustion of her body and that also had reached her soul She sits with all this pressure on her shoulders pressing her down into the chair the physical exhaustion from her illness and yet the emotional exhaustion of her daily life as a woman during the time period and the sudden death of her husband Looking outside at the new spring life and the smell of fresh rain the air and the patches of blue sky motionless She had a dull stare in her eyes fixed away at a patch in the sky she wasnt reflecting but in deep thought She felt something coming to her from outside fromm eh sky the sounds the scent and the colors This is representative of her
