Throughout my life I have lived with a brother and sister that wereonly half blood related to me Their father and my mother both werecarries of the recessive disease Cystic Fibroses CF is terminal andback in the 1990s the treatment only gave those with the disease a lifespan from the late teens to early twenties It was never a good lifeeither months in hospitals with feeding tubes and surgeries treatmentsand pills daily a constant bombardment of needles and testing done bynurses and doctors Both my sister and my brother had to go through thattype of life before and after I was born a healthy baby which led me tobe exposed to the medical field at a young ageThe staff in the hospital was able to make the pain of having thisterminal illness bearable and worked diligently to make my siblingslives longer Seeing as I was young and impressionable I was alwaysbursting with joy when the nurses would let me do something to help myolder sister I loved her so much and wanted to help her live medicinewas the only way I could keep my best friend alive I took to medicineso fast that I surprised my parents by begging to go with them on thelong trips to Saint Christophers Hospital in Philadelphia every timethey went to visit my sister-- my best friendShe was 17 and very sick Lying on our cream couches with tubes andwires everywhere she was too weak and frail from her immune systemcollapsing to eat or walk or do anything but lay I tried to help thebest I could but I was no doctor and had not studied medicine for overtwenty years like the doctors that worked hard to try and save my sisterhad I was an eleven-year-old girl watching the suffering of another andhurting inside because I was helpless to stop the pain For one week Iwatched as my sister slowly slipped further and further awayCome January 24 of 2004 she
