Shakespeare is known as one of the worlds greatest playwrights He haswritten tragedies histories and sonnets But one of Shakespearesgreatest talents was writing comedies He used many techniques whenwriting a comedy and some of these seem to be consistent through outhis comediesOne of the first techniques that should be discussed is the subject matterof Shakespeares comedies Shakespeare always uses love and marriage asthe content for his comedies This can be seen in the comedies Much adoabout nothing As You Like it A Midsummer Nights Dream and The Tamingof The Shrew where the characters fall in love and get marriedAnother technique that Shakespeare incorporates into his comedies isthe use of the lower class for comedy Shakespeare tends to poke fun atthe lower class and make them into fools in his comedies An example ofthis is in Much Ado About Nothing where Shakespeare has the constableDogberry and his foolish assistant Verges run around acting like they areriding horses Another example of Shakespeares use of the lower classfor comedy is in The Taming of The Shrew In that comedy Shakespearemakes Petruchios servants bumbling and incompetentThe use of eavesdropping is another very important device in Shakespearescomedies This technique plays a major role in Much Ado About Nothingwhere it is used to get Benedick and Beatrice together Also it usedconsiderably in As You Like itThe last technique is the one everyone knows and loves the happyending Shakespeare consistently has a happy ending in his comedies Thesehappy endings usually involve the lovers finally getting together andgetting married after they have solved the problem that had been keepingthem apart This can be seen in Much Ado About Nothing where the situationbetween Claudio and Hero was cleared up and they were able to marry AlsoBenedick and Beatrice was able to marry with the help of their friendswho showed them how they truly felt about each other Similar situationsoccur in Shakespeares other plays The overall result being a touchingand enjoyable ending to the comedyAs
