The theme of loss of innocence is a popular theme many authors utilize in their works of literature to enhance the plot and give more understanding of the purpose to the piece This particular theme is used by Harper Lee in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird Elie Wiesel in his memoir Night and Z for Zachariah by Robert OBrien Lee shows this loss of innocence in her character Scout in the beginning she is immature does not understand the harsh cruelty that the people of the world may possess and does not care about anybodys feelings except herself much like every other young child By the end of the novel Scout is mature After she learns from her experiences she has come to have a strong concern for others feelings and an understanding of the world around her Wiesel uses the loss of innocence in revealing how he was dehumanized at the concentration camp He was 15 years old witnessing the torture and killing of many innocent people just like himself he was forced to grow up in order to take care of his father and to be mature enough to handle a situation such as this OBrien uses this theme in the protagonist Anne who lives on her own after being the only one to survive the apocalypse She is forced to grow up and do everything for herself with no one else to help Lee Wiesel and OBrien utilize the theme of loss of innocence in there works of literature to provide a better understanding of the authors purpose
