Q How is vision portrayed throughout the course of King Lear Within King Lear one of Shakespeares greatest tragedies there is a recurring theme involving vision The play concentrates on both mental and physical aspects of such vision Two of the characters from King Lear that deal mostly with such images are King Lear himself and the Earl of Gloucester In essence King Lear and Gloucester unite the dual conflicts portrayed through vision within the play Lears conflict throughout a majority of the play is his lack of clarity understanding and insight into his relationships with the other characters namely his three daughters Consequently his failure to comprehend this is the principal cause of his demise In contrast Gloucester is faced with both aspects of conflict in terms of his vision He too is blind to the deceit which surrounds him with his two sons As the end of the play nears however we discover that his eyes are gouged out by Regan and Cornwall therefore physically blinding him as well Although despite his loss the irony portrayed here is Gloucesters enhanced vision following the actions taken against him Both of these characters portray how this concept of vision is entwined into the plot in terms of the character relations Due to Lears inability to see the truth in other peoples characters he fails to identify their true motives When Cordelia refused to overstate her love for him Kent Lears advisor attempts to argue the truth which he apparently cannot see Answer my life my judgment thy youngest daughter does not love thee least 11151-2 and he too was banished for his honesty In response Kent retaliates with see better Lear and let me still remain the true blank of thine eye 11157-8 in hopes that he may enlighten the King Lears naivety however is so prevalent throughout the play and stands to cloud his vision and condemns him till the end of his
