Ambrose Bierce the author or the short story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge combines both the fantasy and reality of death into the hanging of a southern plantation owner named Peyton Farquhar Bierce conveys the importance of time and the significance it has on those who are awaiting their death In this situation Farquhar imagines escaping his death by freeing himself of his bondages and swimming down the river while dodging bullets being shot at him This fantasy reveals the imagination a human can have when faced with death The detailed description of his escape return to land and journey back to his plantation where he meets his wife all occur in a matter of seconds This quick fantasy is drawn out in a longer time period by Bierce through detailed description The film based on this story gave a very good look at the death of Farquhar and the thoughts he had before dying It was a true depiction of the story that highlighted the extreme contrast between the reality of a situation and imagination Although the film was old and quite simple it displayed precisely the emotions and actions that Ambrose describes in the story I enjoyed the films simplicity and thought it was very well done I am fascinated by the many images that are told in detail of the events in Farquhars mind It is hard to believe this descriptive fantasy takes place in a matter of seconds before the plank is released beneath his feet only to bring on his quick death
