In a Puritan society there are two concepts that has helped distinguish itself from all other societies They are the theocracy and power of a society The theocracy and power were very important for a Puritan society to grow It was the basis of government and how the Puritans governed themselves Theocracy and power are important because of the differing set of ideas from modern communities that built such societies to unfair justice and unequal power between the people Theocracy is a key concept of Puritan theology The Puritans believed in a union of government and state religion Theocracy can completely influence the minds of people in a society Puritans believed that with a theocracy everyone could be equal people would be reaching for the same achievements and everything would just be wonderful However that wasnt the case at all Puritans were not all equal for more people had more power than certain individuals and it was a stern strict society Theocracy is a very dangerous government It tears people against each other and raises much hypocrisy within the community In The Crucible countless of innocent people were hanged and tortured due to the rule of government either for not confessing to a crime they didnt commit or for not confessing to the sin of witchcraft The idea of having to confess to a sin that was not committed was ridiculous to Proctor that he even went as far saying God is dead 111 Proctors faith in God is lost due to the theocratic influence that has been bestowed upon him Power is the main reason for inequality in a Puritan society The judges and priests hold the most power in the towns They decide how the society is run and how the justice is served In a trial there was no jury of someones peers The judges determined if the defendant was guilty or innocent based on very little or no evidence In the
