Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer He could write anything from poems to novels In all of his works there are many motifs that will recur Some of them are the eye the heart an un-named narrator premature burial suffocation a vortex and dreams There are many more but I will not list them In my essay I am going to that about three of his motifs and give examples of how he used them One of Poes most used motifs is animals He uses them in several stories including The Raven Hopfrog and Pit and Pendulum In The Raven he uses a black raven which to the man is funny at first After talking to the animal the man become very scared Towards the end of the story the man is very scared and seems to have became insane In Hopfrog Poe uses orangutans to show the stupidity and the beastly side of the corrupt and cruel rulers Then in the story Pit and Pendulum Poe uses rats to add to the effect of the dungeon and to scare the man on the table Another one of Poes motifs is supernal beauty which is to perfect to exist He uses this motif in Oval Portrait and in a poem where he constantly refers to a woman named Lenore In the story Oval Portrait the painter is so caught up in her beauty and his painting that he doesnt even notice that she was dying or that she was dead The last of Poes motifs that I am going to talk about is the use of jesters in his works This is a person that is ridiculed for their appearance and usually gets back at people by killing them In Hopfrog the midget is constantly abused along with the girl that he likes When he can take enough he snaps and kills the people that hurt him And in the story of The Cask
