In architecture pillars are structural elements which support and uphold a particular structure Pillars are essential to the integrity of many buildings bearing weight and maintaining the edifices structure Just as pillars are necessary for a strong work of architecture figurative pillars are necessary in government The United States Constitution is a highly complex document with a plethora of clauses and statements in need of support Therefore in order to support the entirety of the document the Constitution is built upon pillars Thus the three most important aspects of the Constitution which uphold the values of the Founding Fathers are the three pillars Federalism Separation of Powers and Civic LibertiesFederalism the first pillar of the Constitution is the system of government in which power is split between the national and statelocal governments with the national government being supreme This pillar was formulated primarily as a reaction to previous government structures with which the Founding Fathers were familiar The American Revolution was fought to gain independence from England a monarchy in which the national government was far too strong and infringed upon the rights of the citizens Following the Revolutionary War the Articles of Confederation were established but ultimately failed due to the national government being too weak and too much responsibility being placed on the states Therefore it was necessary for the authors of the Constitution to create a government that was just right hence the present cooperation between the national and state governments Federalism is important because some powers are best left at the state or local levels such as police and other emergency services as outlined in the Reserved Powers found in Article I Section 9 and Amendment 10 of the Constitution however other issues dealt with by the Expressed Powers of Article I Section 8 Clauses 1-17 and the Implied Powers of Article I Section 8 Clause 18 including but not limited to military and foreign affairs should be handled
