Polonius His Family and Hamlets Indecision Introduction Although much of the literary focus on the tragedy in Shakespeares Hamlet focuses on the main characters of the Danish Court namely the king and Queen and of course Hamlet himself the real tragedy of the play lies elsewhere Through the actions right or wrong of the royal family an entire family is destroyed because of their association They are mainly the most blameless characters of the play each working either under orders or being beholden to their fathers memory or in Ophelias case that of love It was through Hamlets indecision that all this came about He used Polonius as a way of getting false information to the king he pushed Ophelia away and frightened her for the same purpose of confusion and misdirection and finally through the killing of Polonius called on Laertes to revenge him Polonius Polonius is described in most texts as being the Kings counselor or his principal advisor He is regarded as a busybody and a generally meddlesome man Probably the most comic of the characters in the play he is used often by Hamlet as a sort of punching bag for his foul mood and feigned madness These aspects of his character have given us the general impression of Polonius which allows ourselves to forgive Hamlet for his murder in Act 3 Scene 4 that and the fact he was hidden behind a tapestry in Gurtrudes room However when Polonius actions are scrutinized more closely you can see the acts of a loving father and a devoted servant While seeing off Laertes he gives a typically over protective fathers advice He tells hem neither a borrower or a lender be and other sage guidance While this can be seen as fussiness it is what we would expect from a father sending his son away to another country Where his protectiveness becomes more sinister is in two places Firstly in
