The Trail of Tears is a term used to refer to the forceful eviction ofthe Five Civilized Native Americans Tribes from their ancestral landsand consequent migration to new Indian Territory which is situated tothe west of the Mississippi River The nature of the westward journeywas tough and deadly The migrants had to face harsh cold weatherinsufficient food and numerous diseases that left many dead along theway President Andrew Jackson encouraged the eviction which was theneffected by the United States Army The Congress authorized the removalpolicy set by the President in 1830 when they passed the Indian RemovalAct in which allowed the Federal government to forcefully move theNative American Tribes west of the Mississippi River This act remainsas a symbol of inhuman treatment and racial discrimination by the UnitedStates Federal government against Indian people Mifflin 1 The trailof tears was a journey that perceived how Native Americans suffer asthey left their ancestral land and saw how that land was handed to whitesettlers a group that was just out to accomplish its selfish ambitionsIt witness how Native Americans fought to stay in there lands and howrough the journey was to those Indian Tribes that never gave up on therelands The governments actions were in bad faith and this paperexamines the atrocities that the Government of the United Statescommitted at that time Assimilation of Native AmericansIn the Early 1830s approximately 125000 Native Americans occupiedseveral millions acres of land that their ancestors have lived in andcultivated through generations This land in the East includedAlabama Florida Georgia North Carolina as well as TennesseeRoutledge 1 The land was quite valuable and highly coveted by whitesettlers who began to flood the region at the time The settlers weredetermined to grow cotton in this fertile land It did not matter tothem that the Native Americans were already civilized Only the landmattered to the settlers and they were determined to obtain it atwhatever cost They mistreated the Native Americans stole theirlivestock looted houses
