Odysseus was always considered to be a great man and a great hero He was known for his brain as well as his muscle This essay will compare the image of Odysseus before and after the Odyssey Many scholars refer to Odysseus as a powerful mythic hero He was not only a top-notch athlete but also a man with great prowess and bravery Odysseus often hesitated before acting and used his reason to evaluate different situations Odysseus was known as a great hero but he also had weaknesses His most important and prevalent weakness was his pride Odysseus had too much pride This is clearly evident in the episode on the Cyclopes land When Odysseus and his men are clearly away from the island Odysseus brags about his exploit Polythemus hears this and hurls giant boulders in the direction of the ship A couple of the boulders came very close to sinking the ship Still that was not enough for Odysseus Carried away with his pride he unwisely gave away his identity to Polythemus Polythemus then called upon his father Poseidon to punish the man who had harmed him Odysseus not only lost a few men but also had a long miserable trip home Odysseus also had a weakness for the opposite sex He enjoyed women Circe and Calypso played big parts in showing Odysseus weakness for women He stayed with Circe for one year and with Calypso for seven years It is amazing to think that a man of such prowess and bravery had such a weakness The biggest surprise when looking at Odysseus was the fact that he had so many weaknesses Nobody would think that a man of such stature would have any weaknesses at all yet many of them Odysseus was a great man but like many great men throughout the history of the world he had his uncontrollable flaws
