A puppy mill is a commercial breeding facility that mass-produces dogs for sale through pet stores or directly to a consumer through the internet or classified ads pawsorg The purpose of puppy mills is to produce the most dogs for the least money in order to make the most profit About 90 of the puppies in pet stores come from a puppy mill pawsorg and there is an estimated 15000 puppy mills in the US alone Animal Rescue Corps Majority of these puppy mills are located in the Midwest but they can be found throughout the country and some dealers even import puppies from other countries petaorg The dogs in puppy mills are treated like cash crops They live in cruel harsh and filthy environments The dogs usually share a small wire hutch to live in these wire cages were intended for feces to fall through the holes This is not a problem However puppy mills stack the cages on one another to fit more dogs This means that the feces of one dog falls on another below This is extremely unsanitary the dogs rarely if ever get bathes Also these dogs are constantly confined to these overcrowded cages with minimal shelter from extreme weather and have no choice but to sleep in their own feces These puppy mill dogs usually have mold maggot infested food and the water is contaminated with algae and feces The purpose of these puppy mills is also inhumane The dogs are continuously bred While health issues concerning breeding and the toll the breeding takes on these dogs does not matter The puppies are taken from their mothers at an extremely early age and sold to people called brokers These brokers transport and resale dogs to pet stores The puppy mill dogs are also usually given steroids and hormones to increase the number of puppies they produce The female dogs are bred twice a year every year until they can
