On the 26th of December 2004 one of the deadliest natural disasters in history occurred a tsunami killing more than 270000 people in fourteen countries across two continents This disaster was considered as the 6th deadliest earthquaketsunami but it was also known as the 2nd strongest earthquake in the world The earthquakes strongest point lasted for around 8-10 minutes The tsunami created a permanent rise in global sea level by at least 01mm and it caused an inactive volcano located in the Leuser Mountain in Indonesia to become activeAn earthquake of a magnitude 93 rictor scale shook the Indian Ocean floor surrounding the island of Sumatra in western Indonesia when one tectonic plate moved under the other setting off a series of tsunamis towards the coasts of Indonesia Sri Lanka Thailand India and the east coast of Africa The friction of plates caused the sea floor to rise and fall approximately 150 kilometers away towards land resulting in the sea heading to the east while the west coast a wave rising to a terrifying height of 30 meters had occurred The wave of mass destruction didnt crash as it hit land instead it just carried on and gulfed the coasts and gained more powerThe sudden withdrawal of the sea gave Thailand some warning that a tsunami was coming whereas in Sri Lanka the huge wave would have been the first thing they saw despite the two hour delay between the earthquake and tsunami many people were taken by surprise due to the absence of an adequate tsunami warning system because as the horrible toll of death and damage continued to escalate in southern Asia it became more visible that lives could have been saved if a tsunami warning system had been set However with just minutes notice and clear orders to escape various citizens who had no clue what was going on or how to respond could have escaped to safe ground The tsunami and
