The two versions of Romeo and Juliet were the 1968 Zeffirelli version and the other was the 1997 Baz Lurham version In the 1968 version the language went better with the time period and made it feel easier to understand The 1997 version made it feel as if the two families were like gangs they drove cars with their name on them around and had guns with their name on them Therefore even though the two movies are similar in Shakespeares original play the 1968 version is a better and more understandable filmIn the 1968 version the time period and clothing corresponds better with the language they use For example at the beginning of the film the two houses run in to each other and in the Capulets say Do you bite your thumb at us If someone said that in modern time they would have no clue on what they just said but they do in the 1997 version This makes it more challenging to understand because they say it in the 1997 film Another example is when the two houses are fighting Benvolio says Put up the swords that makes sense in the older version but in the 1997 version it make no sense because they pull out guns instead of swords On the side of the gun it says 9mm sword which is funny because it says sword on the gun Therefore Zeffirellis film is more fitting because it corresponds better with the language and time period that it is filmedIn the 1997 version the cast used cars and acted like gang members to get around but in the 1968 version they walked in the streets together For example when the Montague are at the gas station and the Capulets come they pull up in their slick ride with their houses name on license plate and everyone hops out like gang members The two houses are like gangs they own parts of
