As I look out of my bedroom window I see a small rural community with fifty homes two businesses and two schools which once was a thriving coal mining town in south western Pennsylvania York Run which was named after two brothers named York who were trappers in the late 1800s was the heart of a booming coal industry in the 40s and 50s When the coal seam was mined out the population dwindled Now we have a high school and an elementary school that provides the major employment in the community My son and I own and operate one of the two businesses in our little town It is an automotive garage that does state inspections We are just across from the only other business J B landscapingFor the most part our community gets along well with each other and does come together when tragedy or hard times fall Our elderly population has decreased over the years but we are honored to have one of very few survivors from the attack on Pearl Harbor I would say that the majority of the community is blue collar workers whose families are more than likely descendants of the coal mining era We have no traffic lights in fact we have only one controlled intersection with stop signs Needless to say everyone knows everyone That in itself distinguishes us from the rest of the bigger communities who when asked dont even know their next door neighbor It makes me sad to see major development and the deterioration of the mom and pop businesses Our community is not as close knit in the winter months but during the summer we often gather in another neighbors backyard to converse and get the latest gossipThe things our community can be proud of is our strong work ethic our ability to come together in a crisis leadership skills high moral
