Prompt 5 How does Oedipus see himself How do others perceive him Explain how the author uses this juxtaposition to communicate themeIn the play Oedipus The King by Sophocles we can see one of the main character is a very strong independent king The way he stands up for what he deserves Oedipus is seen by other characters with some hate in him Although Oedipus sees himself as a very strong king the people of Thebes see him as a negative character due to the true statement of his prophecyAs we see in the beginning of the play Oedipus tries to be tough and strong The way Sophocles states Here I am myself world-famous Oedipus2 Oedipus sees himself as a world-famous This immediately made me think that he will sense that people are in lower power than he is Secondly Sophocles states I shall rid us of this pollution not for the sake of a distant relative but for my own sake10 This is what Oedipus said to Creon it shows that intentionally all this was going to be done for himself not any people in Thebes I sensed that since the whole kingdom was going to an end he was going to try and fix it and make Thebes look good and help out the citizens Now that Oedipus has set the standards of himself we see that the people in Thebes do think about him differently and negativelyI do feel like other perceive him as a powerful man But others seem to see him as an ordinary man that is just in the need to know everything that is going on in Thebes Like Tiresias says you are all ignorant I will never reveal my dreadful secret or rather yours21 Not only does all this questioning about the murder affect Oedipus but other around him too Tiresias just didnt want to tell anyone what had happened and Oedipus was trying to
