Within the novel The Heart of Darkness we are presented with many symbols that act as literary devices that are used to represent an abstract idea or concept Throughout The Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad uses symbols such as the Congo river ivory and to convey a larger meaning within the novelEarly in the novel we are presented with one of the main symbols of the novel the Congo River The Congo River played an important role in the novel for many reasons it allows access to Africa which at the time was known as the Dark Continent The river is a symbol of both good and evil because for Marlow and his ship members it brought forward wealth caused from the ivory in Africa On the other hand it was a symbol of evil because the further and further the men traveled along the Congo the further they went into the heart of darkness that was embodied within the continent of Africa The journey upriver into the Congo was a slow and difficult task which portrayed the slow and difficult task of Marlow adapting to different changes in civilization going from a civilization of order and rule to a civilization of disorder and violence The river not only acts as the passage way it symbolizes something bigger to the reader the idea of struggle
