Symbolism is a powerful method used by writers to deepen or strengthen a meaning in a story In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee symbolism plays a great role All of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird symbolize something important I intend to show these important meanings in the following essay In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee shows the diversity and relationships of the characters in the community An important example of symbolism in To Kill a Mockingbird is showing diversity in the characters Tom Robinson for example was a black man living in a white community He was harmless but since he was a different race from the rest of the folks he was accused of raping Mayella Ewell because everyone knew everyone in Maycomb and people judged others for being different Tom Robinson was a kind man in Maycomb all he wanted to do was help other folks Instead he got teased and treated wrongly and even charged with murder Tom Robinson symbolizes this important role of being part of a diverse community Miss Maudie said it best Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to enjoy They dont eat up peoples gardens they dont nest in corncribs they dont do one thing but sing their hearts out for us Lee 119 Another example is Boo Radley Boo was different from the rest He had the mind of a young child Boo was locked inside his house by his father for many years thus Boo was scared of the outside world At the beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird Scout and Jem assumed that Boo was a murderer because of his isolation By the end of the story though Scout and Jem realized Boo was not a murderer Boo was like a mockingbird kind and gentle Boo Radley symbolizes that you cannot judge people by how they appear on the outside or the stories that
