The main idea of the Scarlet Letter being an effective legal sentence or a punishment is to let the Puritans or the people of the city know that the person who is wearing the Scarlet letter is one being punished for doing wrong The Scarlet letter was a symbol being worn to show that you have been punished for doing wrong or doing someones wrong The Scarlet letter is indeed an effective legal sentence because it was protecting the people from the wrong and satisfying the publics demands for justiceIn the Scarlet Letter the Puritans were really tough on protecting the public Mainly their focus was to have everyone follow their rules They were puritanical on rules and protection There were times where the puritans did not protect the way others sought to seek each other and their rules The puritans made it so that the scarlet letter had shame on those who had broken the law or who had not done what they were told to do so It was none the less a fact however that in the eyes of the very men who spoke thus the scarlet letter had the effect of the cross on a nuns bosom 127 and the people of Boston So basically the puritans did prevent recidivism through rehabilitation or any way through punishment The puritans did prevent recidivism because not only did they punish those with the Scarlet Letter the way the punished took it made it so that they would realize what they did was wrong The punishments given to those who did wrong set an example to inhibit others from doing or committing the same crime Because Hester had to wear an A and going to all of Chillingworths wrong and doing she finally comes out and announces the Dimmesdale indeed is the father of her daughter Pearl At this point it was now time for the people to know I must reveal the secret
