Michael Levins The Case for Torture discusses his point of viewabout whether or not torture should be used Levin endorses the use oftorture and believes it is imperative to save the lives of innocentpeople It is understandable that when the suspect is obvious torturemight be necessary In other cases however when the suspect is not aprominent one using torture is a questionable move to make There isonly so much you can do to prevent the deaths of innocent people withina limited amount of time Another method of extracting informationshould be thoroughly thought of so that the authorities dont feelforced to act irrationally in a desperate situation Levinshypothetical examples defending the use of torture were very biased anddid not convince me that torture should be used without question toextract information For example one hypothetical situation that he illustrated was that ofa group of kidnappers abducting a newborn baby from a hospital Heasked four mothers if they would approve of torturing the kidnappers toget their newborns back They all replied with an immediate yes Ithink that it is correct to assume that if you ask a mother thisquestion after putting her in such a tunnel vision state of mind thatthey will immediately respond with a yes Levin was able to come up with other hypothetical situations Amongthose was one about someone planting a bomb on a jumbo jet This personis the only one who could disarm it Levin says that it is necessary todo anything to the extortionist to save the passengers Surely if theculprit is known then the torture is legitimate but Im not convincedby these examples that Im not sure happened Michael Levins essay didnt convince me because his examples were verybiased His examples were poor and because they were not fact theyfailed to persuade me to agree with his point of view I think that theuse of
