AbstractLasix is a commonly used diuretic it aids in treating several different conditions This report will discuss the indications for Lasix the routes of administration how the medication works in the body what the effects are the follow up labs needed to monitor the effects of the medication the medication interactions side effects and adverse reactionsLasix is a very strong diuretic commonly called a water pill that helps reduce edema Lasix belongs to a class of drugs called loop diuretics because it blocks the absorption of water sodium and chloride from being absorbed in the loop of Henle of the kidneys This causes a large amount of urine output Since this medication can cause serious fluid and electrolyte imbalances this is why a person taking Lasix must be closely monitored by their doctor Regular blood tests are needed to monitor effects of Lasix Usually a BMP is drawn to monitor kidney functioning electrolyte balance glucose level acidbase balance calcium and protein levels Lasix is used to treat heart failure liver disease renal disease pulmonary disease preeclampsia and along with other medication high blood pressure Lasix can be administered IM IV PO and as a nebulizer treatmentLasix used in the treatment of congestive heart failure and renal insufficiency is discussed on the Mayo Clinics website A healthy persons heart pumps at a stable pace thus maintaining normal pressure within their blood vessels However if they suffer from congestive heart failure their blood pressure will change This change in blood pressure can cause fluid to build up throughout the body causing severe fluid retention This can cause swelling in the legs feet or ankles If fluid builds up in the lungs it can cause shortness of breath Because Lasix removes this excess water it helps the swelling to go down Lasix is also frequently used to treat renal insufficiency or kidney
