Throughout time wars have had a powerful impact on the world and have changed the course of history When people desire a reform they oftenresort to war to accomplish it The war for independence in the United States illustrates that war is a powerful instrument for social and economic change There were some very drastic changes that took place in America after the war The mass departure of many loyalists declined the balance of conservatives in the country Because the elegant upper class of aristocrats was weakened new Patriot elites emerged The social democracy was becoming much stronger because equality was being stressed Most of the states made it easier to vote by reducing the property-holding requirements for voters Primogeniture was also being diminished as were other medievel laws The new democratic thinking of people brought about a new fight for the separation of church and state Churches who had remained on the side of the king such as the Anglicans were demoralized They were forced to disestablish and reform as the Protestant Episcopal Church These were just the beginnings of the changes that occured after the war The movement for equality with both slaves and women were incomplete but there were some changes after the war The Slave Trade was abolished in most states after the Continental Congress called for this in 1774 Many Northern states revoked slavery all together In the South some slave owners who believed in total equality also freed their slaves In New Jersey in 1776 some women were temporarily given the right to vote Some women served in the military but had to disguise themselves as men Women were given a much more prestigious role after the revolution People realized that mothers were the ones educating the children to grow
