Even though learning something new can be a stressful experience I am determined to become the first cheerleader in a wheelchair at Benson High School Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of being a cheerleader I think that if I become a cheerleader I will have more upper body strength My mom has always told me Do not let your wheelchair be your disability but let it become your ability What I do not know is that people expected cheerleaders to be perfect My advisement teacher stands in front of the class and piped Okay everyone lets sit down and go through these announcements and then you guys can talk First lunch is breaded chicken patty on a bun with steamed green beans Spring sport checkout will still go on before and after school Oh Anybody who wants to be a cheerleader there will be an informational meeting today after school in the library I know I will not be able to stay after I have to catch the bus I decide to talk to the head cheerleading coach and get an information packet during lunchWhile talking to the coach she tells me You know if you become a cheerleader you will have to stay after school I know I will have to do more than stay after school though I will have to work harder to get on the team due to my physical appearance and limitationsOn April fourteenth my most stressful day of my freshman year cheer tryouts start I am sweating bullets and have panic written all over my face as I pull into the gym Once inside small skinny girls surround me I am the only girl in a wheelchair They begin to stretch as I sit in my wheelchair by the bleachers While watching them I slowly comprehend what I am getting into They switch to arm stretches and I stretch with them Sideway stares come
