Sonnet 8 Shakespeares sonnets have a common theme of love and longing There is also the theme in sonnet eight of a lasting legacy Not his legacy which in the book of sonnets is spoken about many times but the legacy of having a child The idea of having someone of your same blood carry your genetics after your long gone and dead In Shakespeares eyes if you die with out having a child of your own you are dead forever on earth In his words Thou single wilt prove none As usual Shakespeare is touching on a subject that is timeless that any man or woman can relate too from any generation Youll often see today women who take fertility pills to have the child they want or at an older age rich men who were bachelors there whole life marry young women not for love but to have children to carry on their name There are other matters in sonnet eight and I will get to them in various lines but its important to know the over whelming meaning Having a child of your on is as soothing to the soul as beautiful sweet music to the ear In the very first line Shakespeare injects musics role to help him in his Hammad 2 argument Music to hear why hearst thou music sadly Music is the love the Shakespeare is referring to and asks him why is he sad Sweets with sweets war not joy delights in joy This is the order of the world how sweet things are together and arent at war and how joy takes delight in joy almost like moods are contagious Lines three and four ask the question
