Anne Hutchinson and George WhitfieldAnne Hutchinson was a woman of ready wit and bold spirit1 who spoke out against the beliefs and mandates of John Winthrop of her community in Massachusetts Her open beliefs on salvation were deliberately against those already established in the village Anne believed that a persons salvation was not determined by their outward conduct but by experiencing the divine on an individual level She believed that religion was an individual journey of experience with the divine Anne in her trial is quoted saying The Lord knows that I could not open Scripture he must by his prophetical office open it unto me2 This again affirms the fact that she believed the divine had singled her out and spoken directly to her a form of rebirth of knowledge occurred and she was made able to understand God and the scripture In this same passion George Whitfield was a fervent traveling Calvin preacher who changed the way sermons were conveyed to congregations instead of longwinded and thoughtfully written sermons Whitfield memorized sermons and let his emotions on the subjects freely effect the way that he conveyed the message often crying out terms of endearment towards the Lord while throwing his hands towards the heavens3 His message was similar to Annes in that it was concerned with how people could be saved He similar to Anne believed that Instead of receiving religious instruction from their ministers ordinary men and women unleashed their emotions to make an immediate intense and personal connection with the divine 4 He is directly connected to Anne Hutchinson in the fact that they both revolutionized the way that religion was viewed in America both seeing that a personal connection or experience with the divine was essential to the salvation of individuals Salvation was no longer achieved through outward conduct or deeds and was neither held by only a select committee of elite people but was rather achieved through
