If one were to imagine a contemporary Gregorian calendar with a listing of the months weeks and days that entify the current year in boxes numbers and some sort of thematic aesthetic one is envisioning its material presence the chronological calendar as a physical entity But if one could venture into the abstract into the ideas and signs that the calendar makes tangible one could see that the calendar is a system of words and names that have been ascribed to moments of temporalities words and names ordered and repetitious that give order to the human world words and names sequential dates that connect the occurrences of everyday events that have been synchronized to the presence or lack thereof of the sun and the shifts in weather Through the calendar and the language and structures it provides we can tell the stories of a year of the volatile nature of a decade the feel of a day colliding together the emotive the physical and the sociopolitical with a focus on a particular human actor to make the abstractness of being some-thing through its relation to time Perhaps out of a human proclivity for order and meaning the calendar helps human beings acquire a multi-scalar position in time and space providing a spatial location in a temporal continuum that can range from the unfathomably infinite to the graspable century in which one can stand to oscillate forward and backward from the present to the past from the past to the future that is the present The calendar transcends the local and particular while remaining squarely rooted there for the story--the narrative--of a year a day even an ephemeral moment is often the most universal the most encompassing-- the most meta- We have thus far exhausted trillions of winters and summersThere are trillions ahead and trillions ahead of themThe calendar is a model of a narrative--the subject of this genealogical tracing--because it is a mode of discourse
