Existentialism A Twentieth Century Creation In life we must choose our own path If we make a decision and then not see it through with conviction then we will not experience life The most important questions in life are not accessible through reason or science but rather through the expression of free will Freedom is the choice through which humankind creates its own nature It is what distinguishes the human race from animals and plants While we are free to choose our own path we must be ready to accept the risks and responsibilities of our decisions and lack of decisions There is no rational basis for decisions but rather an important factor in determining individuality In life we know that death is inevitable It is best to accept that life is meaningless and death is certain unavoidable fact With this acceptance humans will live a much healthier and happier life Many people struggle with questions on how to lead a meaningful life Instead of struggling with this useless question it is better to decide how you want to live life and then pursue that goal Most people suffer from the anxiety of death and nothingness The anxiety brings on uneasiness about fulfillment in life before the inevitable end Absurdity trivializes the seriousness of the situation We are simply here so we may as well accept the absurdity of the human race We have no meaning other than meaning within life Franz Kafka and Samuel Beckett were both existentialists Through their works The Transformation In The Penal Colony and Waiting For Godot they force the reader to examine the meaning of their existence in a world where there appears to be no meaning Both writers use absurdity to portray their ideals The literary works deal with humans in extreme situations to concentrate on the essential aspects of the human experience Kafka is known for describing ridiculous situations with
