The hollow wood floors creak from our footsteps both upstairs and downstairs but particularly on the stairway itself Up and down we go as the last minute details echo from the up and the down Do you have the card Is this tie okay These pants are too long That dress is too short When the very last detail the black dressy shoes are buckled and tied onto eight rushing feet the creaks are coupled with sharp clicks louder than in any house I know The radio is off and the car is stuffy so the uneven rushes of wind from the single opened window clog my right ear as I hear no conversation although there is a conversation taking place from the front seat where my mother and sister sit As their lips move they are both unconsciously un-looping strands of hair from their gloss-sticky lips each time the wind puts it there The conversation becomes audible at the first stop light The cool air conditioning reaches the back and the window goes up creating a clearer sound but only for a few seconds The voices stop and the air thins in the cool silence just before the single-mile trip ends in the new parking lot The paint from the stalls glows like neon against the black Maybe the halogen street lights make it that way The dull scent of tar and cigarette smoke enters the car as soon as soon as the doors open The sky to the west is bright with ambers and pinks but it is dark where we are Our shoes click but the tar is soft under us as we approach the side entrance where the smokers line the sides like ushers The women stand together each in the same positionone arm tucked in the crossed position the other elbow propping the forearm into the air with the lit
