08Fall08FallGrowing old for Margaret Bullen was not easy or comforting having been rejected from society to end up in a workhouse for the rest of her life working with toxic chemicals that in late age would kill her She had two daughters taken from her and adopted into the United States After an extensive search for their mother the result was a great surprise Their mother had been held since 1967 in a Magdalene Laundry She was very disheveled and looked more than 20 years older than she was her daughter stated Ryan par 2 Margaret was held only to receive hard work lack of nutrition and forced labor She worked six days a week with no pay sometimes up to nineteen hours a day However Margaret was not the only one to be held in these asylums throughout the 19th and 20th century thousands of women had passed through these homes at some point in history These homes and asylums remained open and recently in 1996 they reportedly closed The Magdalene Laundries were also referred to as Magdalen The Maggies Homes Asylums and workhouse Women spent on average little time in these laundries However many women were held late into life and often died there as well This was a long problem in the Irish Culture These asylums were long withheld in history but much research has been developed on the premises of government involvement in these Laundries The Magdalene Laundries have become a large topic in the media with the government refusing any involvement in the funding of and submission of women to these laundries On February 6th 2013 Prime Minister Enda Kenny gave a reaction to a 1000-page report finding the state partially responsible of committing thousands of women to these homes His reaction included women had been sent at a time when Ireland was a harsh uncompromising and authoritarian place Dalby par2 This 1000-page report is called the
