Territorial Behaviour by Desmond Morris is an essay in which he breaks down human territory into three categories Tribal Family and Personal He argues that the instinctive territorial behaviour possessed by humans solves more problems than it creates His essay is a very well thought out one He presents his argument very well and gives enough evidence to support it After reading his essay I was satisfied with it It did not leave me unclear about his intentions or the point he was attempting to get across This essay is excerpted from a piece called Manwatching and is a smaller part of a bigger project It is an informal essay It is a very clean polished piece of work Mechanically it is very sound Morris begins by explaining the three sub headings and then goes onto describing each one in detail He starts with the broadest heading the Tribal Territory and then breaks down the Family Territory and finally the smallest the Personal Territory This is an excellent way of building his argument and making it flow properly Each step prepares the reader for the next one because the preceding one is a more general version of the following Essays are more sound when good examples are presented It gives the reader something that they can relate to Morris uses many appropriate examples in his writing Every idea he presents is accommodated with a real life example His examples are detailed and given in depth They also tie in well with the point he is writing The connection between his point and corresponding example isnt ambiguous His examples are educated and researched He uses examples of human psychological trends and shows how they relate to territorial behaviour The only problem with some of his examples are that he is assuming that every individual goes through life feeling the same way I may agree with some of his examples and so might the majority
