Sports have never exactly been my strong suit but as sports go I haveenjoyed tennis the most Trying out for the team I knew I would beputting myself in a situation outside my comfort zone But in the end I decided to go for itThis brings me to the spring of my freshman year on the first day oftennis tryouts As I sized up the competition I started feelingsomewhat confident Most of the other people trying out while highlyathletic had never played tennis before I on the other hand hadtaken lessons since I was six When we started hitting at least frommy perspective I was hitting as well or better than everyone else Iplaced all my shots cleanly was able to serve with consistency andavoided overexcited wild shots All of this served to vindicate myconfidenceBy the end of the fifth and final day of tryouts much to my surpriseI was actually pretty sure of my abilities and thought I had a chanceof making the team It was a Friday and we were told that the nextschool day Monday the list of who made the team and the absent nameswho didnt would be postedWhen I arrived at school on Monday rather than going to my locker as Iusually would I headed straight for where I knew the list would beposted As I walked I could feel my heart pounding at what must havebeen double its normal rate and was hyperventilating to the point whereI was slightly dizzy When I got to the list I closed my eyes took adeep breath and began to read When I got to the bottom without seeingmy name I thought I must have missed it So I read the list again andthen a third time It wasnt until after my fourth pass that I came tothe realization that I had not in fact made the team The bell rangand
