Cancer is formally defined as an abnormal growth of cells It can grow out of cells that are normal and healthy Normal healthy cells multiply as the body needs them and die when the body no longer needs them Cancer occurs when cells get out of control and multiply too quickly or when they forget how to die There are many different types of cancer since cancer can occur in almost any organ or tissue in the body There are many causes of cancer although the cause of most cancers remains unknown There are also many different treatments for cancer although there is no cure Although that sounds crazy because some people do recover from cancer the problem is that doctors have not found a cure that attacks only infected cancer cells The current cancer treatments can kill the cancer but they can also kill you in the process So thats why doctors are working to find a cure for cancer Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells It starts in the bone marrow which is the soft tissue inside most bones and where blood cells are made If you are healthy your bone marrow makes white blood cells red blood cells and platelets which help your blood clot But when you have leukemia the bone marrow starts to make abnormal white blood cells They dont do the work normal white blood cells would do they grow faster and they dont stop growing when they should Over time leukemia cells can crowd out the normal blood cells This can lead to serious problems such as anemia bleeding and infections Leukemia cells can also spread to the lymph nodes or other organs and cause swelling or pain There are several types of leukemia Leukemia can be acute or chronic Acute leukemia gets worse quickly and may make you feel sick right away while chronic leukemia gets worse slowly and might not cause you to have symptoms
