Americans in the fifties were surprisingly nave towards the power of the mind The mind is substantially paramount but is equally vulnerable It has the power to actuatethought processes into attitudes in tandem with transforming developmental experiences into social habits Social norms in the nineteen fifties were becoming established giving means to conform to the standards of society This conformity of Americans portrayed the ease of manipulation upon the mind potentially taking advantage of how vulnerable it is However these vulnerabilities constitute beneficial aspects of living as well as damaging ones Unconsciously Americans succumbed to a way of living attributable to being vulnerable to these powers of the mind Being vulnerable to the powers of the mind benefited Americans pursuit of the ideal family Everyone desiredthis new ideal family by exercising over achieving ideals such as fulfilling gender roles To meet this new level of an ideal family mothers were staying home taking care of the children and the father was away at work Because the mother was the home keeper and the father was the breadwinner the attitudes of these roles were practiced to achieve the social standardBy cause of actuating thought processes into attitudes it was accessible for mothers to create this ideal family lifestyle by simply creating the thought process of being a mother Just as author Norman Vincent Peale explained in The Powers of Positive Thinking an old man who lost all hope for his life regained his confidence by altering his attitude Peale stated But he did so only when he changed his viewpoint his mental attitude Peale pg 11 Women in the nineteen fifties did the same with their mental perspectives to strive for the ideal American family experienceHousewives developed an attitude specific for this new ideal family adhering to a new form of socializing When Americans began living in the close neighborhoods called Levittowns small groups of housewives gathered to engage in arms length socializing Because of vulnerability
