Stated in the novel Rereading AmericaUnder pressure of the myth ofindividual opportunity we become engrossed in status symbols we tryto live in the right neighborhoods wear the right clothesand eatthe right food 255 This quote illustrates that members of asociety try to fit in with the norms that surround them through thispeople try to gain success Even though people try to fit into thenorms of the society to gain success they are sometimes outcastedbecause of their race or gender In the novel The Bluest Eye by ToniMorrison and the short story Stephen Cruz by Studs Terkel we cansee that a persons race or gender effects the opportunities that aperson is presented even if a person tries to fit into the society thatthey are living in In The Bluest Eye this is shown through the actionstaken by the main character Pecola Breedlove and also her motherPauline Breedlove In Stephen Cruz we can also see thatopportunities are denied to a person because of the main characterStephen Cruzs race Through all these examples we can see that themyth of individual opportunity is not easy for people to obtain becauseof sexism and racism within the society even if a person goes toextreme lengths to try to fit in with society that surrounds themThrough the actions taken by Pecola we can see that a person does notalways receive the same opportunities as another person because ofappearance or their sex In the society that Pecola lived in she didnot receive respect from anyone and was also looked at as an outcast inthe town One specific example that showed that Pecola was not acceptedinto her society was because of the way she looked When she went topurchase candy at a local store in her town she was not even recognizedas a person by the sales clerk Stated by Morrison she looks up athim and sees the vacuum where curiosity out to lodge
