Healthcare as a universal right generates expectations for many citizens While it seems appealing at first many people dont realize what it would require It would increase tax rates cause healthcare professionals to take pay cuts and burden other citizens It would be in conflict with our Constitution and our Declaration of Independence Health care as a universal right would infringe upon the founding fathers vision of government as well as our right to liberty as citizensIn the Constitution it is declared that the government must promote welfare Welfare refers to the state of being happy healthy or successful Many people confuse this statement to mean that the government has an obligation to provide us with the means for a universal state of welfare These people feel that we have a right to life and because health is an important part of life the government should be providing healthcare This is one of the most convincing arguments that pro-health care makes However it is flawed It is clearly indicated that the only obligation the government has is to promote it which they already do There are countless campaigns that encourage healthy lifestyles that are already in place If you are in desperate need of healthcare it is required that our emergency room medics attend to you regardless of whether or not you have health care It is not the governments job to tell people how to live their lives or force them to live in a healthy way and it certainly is not the governments job to pay for the problems that poor life decisions can and will lead to The anecdote in Peikoffs article addresses the point that even though we have the right to life we do not expect our neighbors to feed us clothe us or bathe us It is a universally accepted reality that in order to have food and clothes you need to work and provide those things for
