Marisa PfeifferMr CollinsEnglish 102April 2 2014Justice after 70 YearsIn many cases over the years numerous people have been sentenced to unlawful rulings Activists attorneys and family members have recently pushed for the re-opening of the George Stinney case In 1944 the era of segregation and racism Stinney a 14 year old black boy was sentenced to death for the murder of two young white girls The story goes that while George and his sister Katherine were out tending their family cow Betty Binnicker 11 and Mary Thames 8 had stopped and asked where they could find some maypops a type of wild flower Here is where the stories differ among those involved George and his sister claim after telling the two young girls they did not know where to find the wild flowers they returned home The other side of the story comes from the South Carolina police officers claiming that while interrogation Stinney admits to wanting to have sex with 11 year old Betty He killed Mary because she wouldnt leave the two older children alone Then when Betty resisted his sexual wants he killed her as well After realizing what he had done he dragged both of the bodies to a nearby ditch then returned home McLaughlin As we can see there is major discrepancy in the two stories that surfaced about the events Then stories begin to a line again When the girls did not return home that evening hundreds of volunteers including George Stinney set out looking for them Word got out that Stinney had mentioned to another volunteer that he saw the two girls earlier that afternoon When police got wind of the information they placed George under arrest for the murder of Betty Binnicker and Mary Thames One of the leading problems with this case was the process of integration Black Stinney was wrongfully interrogated by a group of all white officers with no lawyer or parent
