IntroductionThis paper is the reflection to Larsen-Freemans A Complexity Theory Approach to Second Language DevelopmentAcquisition chapter 2 As is often discussed the complexity theory CT encompasses the various features affecting second language L2 acquisition It also tries to describe the complicated system in L2 learning by focusing on not only cognitive perspective for individual L2 process but also sociocultural perspective However as the theory is widely extended to many fields from math science to linguistics it seems very complicated and confusing for us I have to confess that I was not completely confident in understanding the theory before taking this class It is important to truly understand the idea of any theory and appreciate the beneficial findings rather than criticizing the idea without conscious reflection and understanding The misconception always deprives us of appreciating the value of the ideas in the theory Therefore the purpose of this paper is demystifying the concept of CT and providing educatorsteachers the useful insight for teaching L2 in classroom I will initially clarify the key features of CT focusing on Larsen-Freemans perspective of language acquisition Nick Elliss frequency effect and language change and dynamic processes of L2 development Next I will uncover the pedagogical implication of CT which is not comprehensibly discussed in Chapter 2 Finally I will point out two doubts remaining unresolved for the further exploration of the theory in SLA Key Principles of the Complexity Theory CT In this section I will reveal the convoluted concept of he complexity theory by outlining 1 Larsen-Freemans language acquisition view and elaborating the critical ideas of CT 2 Nick Elliss frequency effect based on emergentists perspective and 3 language change and development process in terms of sociolinguistic view self-organization co-adaptation and soft-assembly and a cognitivist McLaughlins restructuring theory in L2 interlanguage IL1 Larsen-Freemans View of Language AcquisitionInspired by Corders The significance of learners errors 1967 and Selinkers Interlanguage 1972 L2 performance was
