Imagine all of the buildings in Philadelphia consisting of the same boring and dull arrangements The architecture during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries helped to construct and influence Philadelphia creating a beautiful city for all to enjoy Many different types of architecture and designs contributed to Philadelphia being one of the most significant cities During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the city of Philadelphia was affected by the early architecture which led it to become one of the most significant cities in the world One example of Gothic architecture in the city of Philadelphia is The Eastern State Penitentiary The structure was put into construction in 1822 by John Haviland and was built with two stories to accommodate the number of convicts that were going to be added to the prison The jail was designed with a gothic exterior and a church like interior within the walls of the prison The building consisted of four hundred and fifty centrally heated cells with each cell containing running water a heating system an accessible toilet and a skylight Barrel vaulted hallways were filled with tall arched windows throughout the building The earlier cell blocks represented the first modern building in the United States The interior of this building consisted of centrally heated cells containing the necessities for prisoners during their time in the confinement The outside exterior was made of brick and wood to provide strength for the accommodation It is composed of high walls of hewn and square granite over an area of eleven acres After the first escape in 1832 the imprisonment made a more complex security system for the confinement The structure was built to influence the study and practices of prison managements all around the world but soon closed as a confinement center in 1971 Eastern State Penitentiary soon became a model for over three hundred prisons throughout the world This historical building has brought tourists from all over to see its magnificent
