Over the past several years the game industry has gone from small potatoes to a major media industry player It dwarfs even movie ticket sales with a whopping 10 billion in revenue However many of the games sold have violent content not suitable for children and that nonetheless they can be easily purchased by the aforementioned This has spurred a push towards safeguards and legislation to prevent such games from falling into the hands of the nations youth Many retailers have already begun to require identification in order to purchase a game meant for a mature audience However though the game industry has already implemented its own rating system to inform parents of objectionable content not all parties pay these warnings heed In one particular instance a 10 year old was documented to buy a videogame from a Miami best buy that was meant for those 17 and older The game featured adult content such as murder prostitution theft and assault However its been fount that 78 percent of retailers allow such games to be purchased by minors Laws are now being proposed on the state and federal level that there be regulation placed on the sale of mature videogames to minors While laws such as these have been presented in the past the videogame industry with its deep pockets has been able to successfully thwart these attempts The game industry argues that video games are free speech and cannot be censored under the fist amendment but that is not holding up in court I believe that there should be laws preventing minors from buying such violent games A 15 year old cannot buy a ticket to an r rated movie so why should they be able to buy a videogame destined for the same 17 and up crowd Though I believe that it is the parents responsibility to keep their children from interacting with such content there should be laws
