Since the end of the post-Cold War era there has been a widespread problem of violent conflicts political instability and unjust practices in countries across the globe which has increased the need for post-conflict reconciliation and building sustainable peace Today countries in conflict are engaging in peace processes and peace building talks in an attempt to end violence and bring long lasting peace Peace processes usually stem from international pressure which challenges parties involved in conflict to ceasefire and engage in peace talks According to the former UN Security-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali the mission of peace building seeks to identify and support structures which will tend to strengthen and solidify peace in order to avoid a relapse into conflict The success of peace processes however has had mixed records of success with the results more damaging than what they are intended for A major challenge faced during post-conflict talks is the escalation of violence which is suggested to question the legitimacy of peace processes Hoglund 2005 It is assumed that violence in peace processes is largely triggered by parties involved who are opposed to the peace and would prefer to return to civil conflict Hoglund 2005 pp2If the purpose of peace processes is to end fighting and work towards building sustainable peace which should last long after the departure of peace builders why then do countries in post-conflict negotiations continue to face challenges of on-going violence and political instability Several experts in the field who have conducted research in conflict inflicted countries provide evidence on why violence continues to prevail during peace processes which will be discussed in the paper Looking at Liberia Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka as case studies the paper will seek to answer this question through a review of evidence on peace processes and critically analysing why peace processes fail to end violence and perhaps provide possible solutionsLiterature ReviewThere has been on-going debate on the challenges peace processes face
