Violence seen throughout the course of Western history has made many lasting permanent effects upon mankind In the advent of the Age of Enlightenment there was a thirst for knowledge exploration and wealth which caused a growing sense of superiority within Western civilization Advancement in technology and science in turn resulted in the notion that the white man was the height at which any civilization could achieve treating any non-European culture as inferior to their own Hall 280 The question of who has the power and who does not is easily recognizable but the real question one must consider is how the West treated those who were different from them The subaltern class of the Other appears in that the Other is non-European civilizations that are outside of social political and geographical dominion of power This idea of inferiority between racial groups almost always based off of appearance and culture led to occurrences of physical and epistemic violence justified in the name of science greed and war Though physical and epistemic violence are two very diverse forms of violence it can be shown through film and text that these two forms of violence often go hand in hand with each other in the attempt to tame study and assimilate the Other I will discuss how these two distinct forms of violence have been merged by the cultural conception that is the West and how it has been used to form the Western ideal of modernity that we know todayBefore I can give any conclusive examples and evidence of these forms of violence one must know the clear distinction between the two Physical violence obviously enough is the use of brute force in the case of the West to appropriate control and coerce a motive that is favourable to the one in power Examples of this kind of violence discussed in lecture could be from the film The Bible and the Gun 2002 which went into
