In the North American Society individualism takes a huge role where everyone is looking for self-gratification People seek satisfaction and therefore can exceed the impossible It might be called thirst for power and greed and it is considered to be one of the main structures of sins in the society Structural Sins are acts committed against others that degrade oppress or exclude It is a state or attitude instilled by society Some examples are racism materialism sexism and political affiliation It is necessary to realize that those structures are concrete realities which originally were rooted in personal sin and in turn they develop their own power It means that the power of sin manifested in social structures is difficult to eradicate even if so desired by individuals People no longer see the world in terms of good and bad but instead see it in terms of economically efficient or inefficient Between the structure of sin and personal sin there is a reciprocal relation personal sin strengthens the structure of sin and the structure of sin allures personal sin One North American economical project that might have some complains about its business is Wal-Mart and its process of progress is called Wal-martization Wal-martization is when a large chain store moves into a region and devastates local businesses driving displaced workers into low paying chain store jobs Apparently it looks like the structure of sin is embedded in the roots of the business since people do not matter as long as there is good income and reputationIn contrast Pope Benedict XVI spends a considerable time defining what he calls authentic human development He says Authentic human development concerns the whole of the person in every single dimension Without the perspective of eternal life human progress in this world is denied breathing-space Enclosed within history it runs the risk of being reduced to the mere accumulation of wealth humanity thus loses the courage to be at the service
