Disneyland Fantasy vs the Future Walt Disney had a dream He wanted to conjure up a place where every one is happy and nothing ever goes wrong and where you could wish upon a star and your dreams would come true Mouse Tales pg 18 It sounds nice but in a world that had recently been wracked by world war and would soon see the likes of Vietnam the Kennedy assassination and pair figure skating this was no easy task The preservation of innocence necessary to run a place like Disneyland comes at a price in a world as impure as ours How ever despite all the difficulties in preserving purity Walt Disney was at least somewhat successful in his endeavor On the other hand there were some instances where he was not so successful Disneys true success lies in Fantasy Land It is the area in which purity is the most rigidly upheld This is largely because of the attractions there Almost every single one demands that your imagination makes some great leap For instance on The Pirates of the Caribbean it is fairly easy to adjust to the situation Your are in a fabricated environment which is inhabited by incredibly life like animitronic robots that act out little scenes for you You get basically the same effect as watching television The view internalizes everything that is happening but does not have to actively participate in any way I would venture to say that some one riding the Dumbo ride needs to do significantly more than just look at the ride to actually believe they are cruising around on top of a small elephant who happens to have the ability to fly A similar process goes on through all the other rides especially Toon Town A great amount of imagination possibly more than adults posses is necessary to make the leap from looking at gaudy plastic furniture to actually believing you
