The Reform Act of 1832 was the representation of the People Act it was an act which brought about a series of changes to Britains electoral system What the Reform Act did was that it extended suffrage to the middle classes who had been increasing in wealth and power since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution However the Reform Act did not extend the vote to the working classes The Reform Act planned to re-examine constituent areas such as Manchester and Birmingham moreover it got rid of rotten boroughs The Reform Act of 1832 was popularly known as the Great Reform Act because the Bill passed after a long and great struggle in Parliament and through-out the country I agree to an extent that social discontent was the main reason for the passing of the Reform Act of 1832 however in this essay I shall be covering areas in which social unrest was the main factor for this and where it was considered not to be The first argument in agreement with this statement is that many historians believe that social discontent was one of the most popular aspects for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 But in opposition of this statement it was considered that the Whigs were not being pushed by social discontent into giving the workers the vote as there was no evidence in the Reform Act to show that the Whigs responded directly to popular pressure However it can also be said that others felt that the outside events such as the revolution in France or Catholic Emancipation may have triggered the change in mood of the Whigs as well as extra parliamentary pressure from groups such as the Birmingham Political Union In addition demand for reform had grown as the Industrial Revolution did there needed to be a fairer distribution of voting towns and the change in the voting process itself At the time voting was only
