ABSTRACTThis study applied two chemometric data mining techniques agglomerative hierarchical clustering AHC and principal component analysis PCA to investigate the spatial water quality patterns of Johor islands and identify possible sources of pollution in the Johor Marine Park waters AHC was applied to 18 sites and grouped it into three categories ie Marine Park Development and Protected islands A second AHC carried out for the 13 Marine Park islandsgenerated three groupsbased on the islands size population and distance from the mainland To a certain extent the PCA was successful in providing an indication of pollution source identifying six factors explaining more than 70 of the total variance in the data The factors indicate possible pollutant loading originating from i natural sources of variation ii sewage and waste pollution iii wood preservatives heavy metals and iv boating activities It is recommended that additional study on the sources of pollution especially heavy metals is needed to prevent further pollutant loading into the water column Sewerage treatment systems needs to be maintained regularlywhile facilities and management systems should be established to manage domestic waste Additional findings from this study revealed that some analytical equipment sensitivity level did not satisfy the thresholds of the Malaysia Marine Water Quality Criteria and Standard MWQCS In addition it is recommended that the Department of Environment DOE and Department of Marine Park DMPM work together to increase the number of parameters monitored especially for nutrient input ie AN phosphate BOD and CODKEYWORDS marine park island water quality Johor chemometrics principal component analysis agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis1INTRODUCTIONIslands in Malaysia playan important role in Malaysias socio-economy and protection of biodiversity it generates income through tourism provides fish breeding grounds and are hotspots forbiodiversity Yacob 2012 Lim 1996 These islands are highly dependent on healthy and unpolluted environment to continue and thrive as a host of critical ecosystem servicesGenerally islands in Malaysia are divided into three categories namely the gazetted Marine Park Areas Development
