Genetically modified organisms are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria viruses and other plants and animals GMOs were created in 1983 as a tobacco plant resistant to an antibiotic 1996 was also the year that the EU approved the importation and use of Monsantos Roundup Ready soya beans in foods for people and feed for animals These beans have been modified to survive being sprayed with the Roundup herbicide that is applied to a field to kill weeds Martina Newell-Mcgloughlin the Director of International Biotechnology at the University of California says GMO crops are more highly regulated and tested for safety than any other crops grown in the US Such as the FDA Food and Drug Administration However the FDAs policy for regulating GMO foods does not require additional testing to prove safety unless a GMO food is significantly different nutritionally or otherwise compared to its non-GMO food equivalent Some people believe these types of foods can pose a threat to the wellbeing of humans It could come with not only health hazards but also environmental hazards as well People who have not already died from allergic reactions or poisoned by food supplements such as L tryptophan might not even know about its effects until the future Recently a New York Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal sponsored a state bill that would have required labeling of genetically modified food The bill failed in the committee to receive any votes but currently she is working on bringing another way to receive votes for the bill She was quoted saying The fact that this bill made it to an agenda demonstrates the distinct desire on the part of the New York State Assembly to tackle tough issues and is also illustrative of tremendous impact that the advocates nationwide have had
